Functions of labels

Although it would seem that the label is a modern product, it turns out that it has been used for many years to mark goods. Today, its key function has not changed – it is still primarily a carrier of information. However, the world is subject to constant, dynamic transformation.

This, in turn, has an impact on labeling industry, which is now becoming one of the fastest growing sectors of economy with really great potential. Today’s labels are no longer just an “ordinary” information carrier or a means of identifying a product. The changes taking place in the modern world have meant that both the properties and the use of labels have significantly expanded.

Labels are relays of specific content, indispensable elements marking products, devices, machines, places. Labels can be applied directly on the surface of the goods, or on its casing or packaging in the form of barcodes, QR codes, RFID codes.

Labels have many important functions

One of them is the information and identification function. Thanks to a label placed on a given product, consumers can not only recognize which product they are dealing with, but also learn, among other things, about the intended use of the product, its properties and use. Product labeling allows the manufacturer to be identified and valuable information can be obtained. Therefore, depending on the industry for which a particular label was manufactured, we can obtain information, for example, regarding production date, shelf life, expiry date, origin or ingredients. The label also confirms the quality and authenticity of the product.

The identifying function

The identifying function, however, is not only relevant to consumers. Labels allow for efficient verification of goods, thus enabling logistic operations. They also facilitate effective traceability. Labels certifying originality are also a guarantee of safety and protection against quality loss.

Another important function of labels is protective and ecological function. Labels are very often used as warning signs for products or places that may endanger their users and the environment. The label carries of valuable information regarding its protection. Due to posted stickers and information on them, recipients are warned about the danger to the environment as a result of using or manipulating marked products.

Label is also successfully found as a marketing tool.

It is often the factor that decides whether consumers decide to buy a given product. Thanks to the eye-catching, attractive label design, manufacturers are able to provide their product with such valuable value nowadays. The label often replaces even the packaging of products. In this case, however, it is necessary to include all information required by law (e.g. origin), or technologically (e.g. magnetic strip).

Nowadays, a label often plays many innovative functions. A great example are RFID tags, which are a tool that automates many processes and increases work efficiency. Thus, they contribute to the reduction of possible human errors, saving time and costs.
