Energy labels

Energy labels appeared in 1995 following the European Union's ELD 92/75 EC directive. Despite various detailed amendments, they are still in use, which means that Polish manufacturers have also had to bear them in mind for almost twenty years. This is because EU law requires manufacturers of certain products to label them with so-called energy labels. Each energy label contains information on the energy class and basic parameters of the appliance.

On which equipment are such energy labels placed?

EU regulations oblige manufacturers of a wide variety of items to use energy labels. These include:

  • household appliances (fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, hoods, hoovers),
  • water heaters,
  • air conditioners,
  • light sources (lamps, bulbs and ballasts for fluorescent lamps),
  • TVs,
  • cars (these labels declare CO2 emissions instead of energy efficiency), as well as tyres.

Labels are printed in a standardised pattern. There is different, typical information for each appliance, but some information is common to all or most, like the energy efficiency class and the model and brand of the appliance. The energy class, indicated by a letter from A+++ to G, is generally the ratio of the energy consumption of an appliance to the standard energy consumption of other appliances of its type. For cars, the label provides information on CO2 emissions, with the so-called fuel efficiency stated for tyres.

As far as other data is concerned, the label on the fridge, for example, informs about the noise generated and the capacity of the appliance. On a television, on the other hand, information is provided about its power rating, annual energy consumption or screen diagonal.

  • Various energy labels.
  • Energy labels affixed to the tyres.

How are our energy labels produced?

Due to the need for colour coding, the energy labels are pre-printed. Then, before labelling the device, the variable information is printed in black. Energy labels use peelable adhesives that make them easily removable from surfaces such as plastic, glass or metal.
